Dyal Singh College owes its origin to the extreme generosity and foresight of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, founder of ‘The Tribune’ and ‘Punjab National Bank’, who willed his vast wealth in 1895 for the setting up of an Education Trust for a truly secular college. Consequently, Dyal Singh College was established at Lahore in 1910. After the Partition of India, Dyal Singh College was established in Karnal and in Delhi. It started functioning in the capital as a constituent College of the University of Delhi in 1959 and was taken over by the University of Delhi as a University maintained institution in 1978. The College Campus of over 11 acres is centrally located on metro map at Lodhi Road in South Delhi in the vicinity of Lodhi Garden, Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Stadium, India Habitat Centre, India International Centre, CGO Complex and many other institutions of national/international significance. Presently, the College is imparting education to over 4600 students, including foreign students from Afganistan, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Turkemenistan & Indonesia in 19 courses (including 12 honours & 2 post graduate courses) through 18 departments consisting of over 230 well qualified faculty members and over 100 non teaching staff members

During recent years, the College has registered an impressive quantitative and qualitative improvement. The quality of the incoming students and the University results has shown a progressive upward movement. The addition of essential amenities and other facilities for students has made the College a prestigious institution for academic and co-curricular activities.The faculty of the college takes interest in research programmes beside teaching and at present various research programmes involving grant of Rs. 1,67,74,742/- are going on in different departments of the college. A good number of research papers, books, articles have been published/presented at conferences by teachers of the college.

Students of the college have been honoured with Meritorious awards by University of Delhi. A good number of prizes have been won by students in sports, NCC and Art & Culture in intercollege/University competitions.

The College has been selected as one of the Centres for evaluation of scripts of University Annual/Semester/Supplementary Examination and is also providing infrastructure for conduct of University Examination/classes for students of School of Open Learning, University of Delhi. As students welfare measures, economically deprived students are granted stipend, reserved category students are allowed to keep books from college library for the entire academic year, books/study material have been added to the library for students aspiring to enter services, special equipment has been added to augment educational services for differently abled persons and counselling sessions are held by trained counsellors for benefit of students.The various subject societies organize seminars, lectures, discussions, debates, exhibitions and education trips which are crucial components in enhancing the learning process. These help to encourage students to explore beyond the prescribed syllabus, interact with experts and get an exposure to important events and aspects of contemporary society. The Commerce Association’s communique, ‘Ecowaves’, the annual festival of the Economics Association; the annual festival of the Chemistry Society, ‘Rasaynika’; ‘Prakriti’ the Annual Inter-College Festival of the Botany Society have made an impact on the university community at large. ‘Vasundhra’ of the Geography Society, ‘Celluloid’ of the English Literary Society, ‘Polis’ of the Political Science Association, ‘Infovision’ of the Computer Society, the Gandhi Study Circle, the Bengali Society, Mathematics Society, Sanskrit Society, Urdu Society and Zoology Society organize events which engage teachers as well as students in scholastic adventure and discovery.The addition of essential amenities and other facilities for students has made the College a prestigious institution for academic and co-curricular activities.
